The 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus has reached a critical inflection point, and the data suggests we are witnessing a historic shift in the global hierarchy.
As of Round 11, Uzbek sensation Javokhir Sindarov has established a commanding two-point lead over the field, moving a massive step closer to a World Championship challenge against Gukesh Dommaraju.
Sindarov’s performance has been defined by tactical fearlessness. His Round 10 victory over Praggnanandhaa—secured via a daring piece sacrifice—not only broke modern records for the most wins in a single Candidates event but also mathematically distanced him from veteran pursuers like Anish Giri and Fabiano Caruana.
While Round 11 saw a series of draws, Sindarov’s stability under pressure from Caruana’s Catalan preparation proves he has the defensive rigour required for the highest level.
In the Women’s section, the narrative is equally compelling.
Vaishali Rameshbabu has taken sole command of the standings. After a clinical Round 11 win with the black pieces against Aleksandra Goryachkina, she now sits a full point clear of her closest rivals, Zhu Jiner and Anna Muzychuk.
With only three rounds remaining, the chess world is bracing for a potential new era led by the under-21 vanguard.
